The Wharf Shed
Quick take
Grabbed a late lunch here on a whim after a wander along the foreshore and the location alone made it worth stopping — water on one side, kids playing in the park on the other, and a menu big enough that everyone in the group found something. Food was solid rather than spectacular, service was a bit stretched on a busy Saturday, but nobody complained because the view was doing most of the talking. Good casual pick when you want to eat without leaving the water behind

The Wharf Shed’s story is genuinely tied to Geelong’s transformation. The original structure was a bond store on the Moorabool Street pier, built in the early 1900s, before the pier itself was decommissioned and demolished in the 1950s. The building was relocated to its current site, where it spent time as a marine fuelling station and later a Telstra network exchange — a fairly unglamorous run before its current chapter began. In 1998, it was transformed into a café on the foreshore and became the first commercial business to open as part of the city’s Steampacket redevelopment, the project that turned Geelong’s waterfront from industrial backwater into the tourist drawcard it is today.
These days, The Wharf Shed is exactly what its history suggests: a large, casual, all-day venue rather than a destination fine-diner. It’s open every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a menu sizeable enough to cover traditional favourites, international cuisine, and vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-friendly options. The bar side is well stocked too, with an extensive beer and wine list including craft and tank beer options.
The location does plenty of work here — right at the water’s edge at Eastern Beach, with views across the bay and a park alongside that keeps younger visitors entertained between courses. It’s genuinely set up for groups: extensive, casual seating means walk-ins are welcomed, and the venue doubles as a popular spot for private functions, from birthdays to bigger celebrations. Several reviewers mention upstairs function spaces with balcony views over the harbour for weddings and engagement parties.
Reviews on The Wharf Shed are genuinely mixed — strong on location, atmosphere, and certain standout dishes (the salt and pepper calamari and Caesar salad both get specific praise), but inconsistent on service speed and pricing depending on how busy it gets. It’s the kind of venue that does its best work as a relaxed, no-fuss lunch stop with a view rather than a special-occasion meal — though its function spaces clearly punch above that for events.
